I. GENERAL INFORMATION
1. History
Dipolog's earliest recorded history started in 1834 when a civil government was organized by the Spanish Provincial Government of Misamis under whose jurisdiction Dipolog belonged, with the appointment of a "Captain" as town executive and a "Teniente" and an "Aguacil" to maintain law and order. Don Domingo Ruiz, a native, was the town executive that year when the townsite was transferred from Tulwanan to where it is now.
History says that in that year a Spanish Recollect Missionary arrived in Tulwanan believing that the townsite was still there. Upon meeting a native, he asked: " Donde esta el Capitan?" Our unknown hero understanding only the word "Capitan" pointed to the west and said in Subano "Di...pag," meaning across the river. Guided by his muchacho, a Tagalog boy named Antonio Subido, the Padre proceeded downriver and upon reaching the townsite named the place "Dipag". Through the years, this was corrupted by mispronunciation and the intermingling of Visayan and Subano words into what it is today . . . DIPOLOG. 2. Geography
Dipolog is situated in the northwestern part of the Province of Zamboanga del Norte. Bounded on the North by Dapitan City, on the East by the Municipality of Polanco, on the South by the Municipality of Katipunan and on the West by the Sulu Sea, it has a total land area of 13,628 hectares technically described as follows:
"From the intersection of Longitude One Hundred Twenty Three Degrees (123) and Twenty Eight (28) Minutes and Latitude Eight (8) Degrees Thirteen (13) Minutes due West following said Latitude until it intersects Longitude One Hundred Twenty Three (123) Degrees and Twenty (20) Minutes; thence due North following the said Longitude until it intersects Latitude Eight (8) Degrees and Twenty Two (22) Minutes; thence due East following said Latitude until it intersects Longitude One Hundred Twenty Three (123) Degrees and Twenty Two (22') Minutes; thence due to North following the said Longitude until it intersects the middle course of Diwan River; thence following the river to a point exactly North of Diwan School building; thence in a straight line to the confluence of Gusawan Creek and Layawan River; thence following downstream of said river to a point exactly East of school building of Sangkol; thence in a straight line to the sitio of Ginotolan; thence Northeast in a straight line crossing Dipolog River to the sitio of Balimbing; thence Northeast again in a straight line to M.M.M.
