Dipolog City has made it again in its bid for the establishment of Philippine Science High School Campus in Barangay Cogon, this city.
In a resolution coming from the Board of Trustees of the Office of the Executive Director of the Philippine Science High School System, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), it approved the establishment of a Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Campus in Cogon, Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte to be known as PSHS-Zamboanga Peninsula Region Campus (PSHS-ZRC) based on RA No. 8496 which provides for the establishment of a PSHS Campus in each of the administrative regions of the country.
The said resolution was received by the Office of the City Mayor last April 17, 2015 through email.
Under the resolution, it stated that the establishment of the PSHS Capus Region IX-Zamboanga Peninsula responds to the need of ensuring optimum distribution of resources and opportunities for a quality secondary education to many science-inclined gifted students in Region IX and neighboring areas of the peninsula.
It was further learned that Dipolog City surpassed the criteria set by the PSHS Committee on Site Evaluation for New Campuses and other criterion including the peace and order condition of the city. Also, Dipolog is considered as the Agro-Industrial Growth Center in Region IX and the country’s southern gateway to the rest of the world or the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines-East Asian Growth Area).
Moreover, the local government of Dipolog City through Mayor Evelyn Uy has signified their readiness to donate a five-hectare parcel of lot for the permanent site of the PSHS in cogon, Dipolog City, and to support the first few years of operation of the PSHS-ZRC through provisions of funds for the renovation of temporary classrooms and dormitories situated at the LSDEC (Livelihood Skills Development & Enhancement Center) and sports complex.
Aside from these, the Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Norte through Governor Roberto Y. Uy has also pledged the amount of Php10 million funds for site development inclusive of road concreting network and the construction of a perimeter fence at the permanent site of PSHS-ZRC, while Congressman Rosendo S. Labadlabad of the 2nd District of the province of Zambo. Norte promised to donate the amount of Php35 million funds for the construction of a dormitory building within the campus.
Adding to the various commitments made by the province’ top officials, the Regional Development Council IX also expressed full support for the move through concurrent Regional Director of NEDA IX, Ms. Teresita Socorro C. Ramos.
It is expected that construction of the PSHS Building will start either later part this year or early part of 2016 following its site development and completion of technical requirements. (CIO-prr)
